social skill and autism

social skill deficits and autism go hand-in-hand.  They are typically anti-social and do not interact with others normally including:

  • Fails to form relationships with parents, siblings, and other family members
  • May not like to be touched (also known as tactile defensiveness) by people and/or clothing or just the opposite and likes the pressure of hugs
  • Avoids eye contact
  • Throws frequent tantrums especially if their routine is changed.
  • The person or child may have problems transitioning from one activity to another, while other's in the group are ready for a change in activity.
  • May not be able to “read” others emotions.  My son has a tendency to jump up and down excitedly when someone falls or is hurt.  I think it is a stemming response because he doesn’t know what to do.
  • Does not play with toys appropriately or has no interest in them.  May like to line things up in a row.
