General Information

Relationship Development Intervention

Relationship Development Intervention or RDI was began by Steven Gutstein, PhD and his wife, Rachelle Sheely, PhD. Trained as clinical psychologists, their focus on this therapy is to help children learn how to develop social connections with others, beginning with parents and extended family.

This therapy targets social interaction deficits found in autism. Parental commitment underlies this therapy as they must work with the RDI consultant, watch DVDs on how to proceed with the program, and attend workshops. Parents learn games to help them coach their child and provide videotapes to the consultant of their time with their child for the purpose of keeping track of objectives.

This therapy is fairly new. More clinical evidence over time will show how effective it is. However, it is believed that RDI can help children when started at a very young age, and can also benefit children with autism of all ages.
