brain dysfunction in sensory system

brain dysfunction in sensory system means that the senses are not organized or understood “correctly” in the brain.  We are all aware of the five senses.  However the senses are also divided in three major systems to better understand sensory dysfunction.

One major system is Tactile, when nerves under the skin send signals to the brain.  This includes touch, pressure, heat/cold, pain.

A second major group is Vestibular, which relate to the inner ear functions that recognize movement and head position.

The third is the Proprioceptive System when the body “knows” about the muscles, joints and tendons so that a person is aware of his or her body’s position.

Here is another definition:  “sensory integrative dysfunction is a disorder in which sensory input is not integrated or organized appropriately in the brain and may produce varying degrees of problems in development, information processing, and behavior. - http://www.autism.org/si.html
