brain
dysfunction in sensory system means that the senses are not
organized or understood “correctly” in the brain.
We are all aware of the five senses.
However the senses are also divided in three major
systems to better understand sensory dysfunction.
One major system is
Tactile, when nerves under the skin send signals to the brain.
This includes touch, pressure, heat/cold, pain.
A second major group
is Vestibular, which relate to the inner ear functions that
recognize movement and head position.
The third is the
Proprioceptive System when the body “knows” about the
muscles, joints and tendons so that a person is aware of his or
her body’s position.
Here is another
definition: “sensory
integrative dysfunction is a disorder in which sensory input is
not integrated or organized appropriately in the brain and may
produce varying degrees of problems in development, information
