Sensory integration issues in a 5 year old
boy include the brain’s inability to recognize or integrate
signals, data, or information from the body’s senses—visual,
hearing, smell, taste, heat/cold, pain, the parts and functions
of the body.
Below is an Amazon.com
book review from a parent who
has a 6-year-old son and how becoming educated has helped this
parent. After reading the other reviews on sensory integration for
children, the book helps parents work on “accepting” that
their child is different and then move on to learning the
different way their child perceives the world and from this
knowledge, it is a positive experience for both child and
parent.
Lives
up to its name -- provides excellent practical solutions,
March 15, 2006
My six year old
son has struggled with dyspraxia
and sensory integration challenges, and this has helped us more
than any other book I've found to date. I expected that it would
provide me with some new ideas for mitigating difficult
situations, which it did...what I did not expect was that it
would impact Josh directly and profoundly. This year he has
become increasingly aware that he's "different", which
has been the source of great sadness. As I read the book, I
shared anecdotes with him that were consistent with our
experiences with soccer, eating, homework, and more, and it
provided such relief to Josh to learn that there are other boys
like him in this world. My thanks to the authors for sharing
their stories, and for helping us to understand more about what
we can do now and what's ahead as he grows older. - http://www.amazon.com/Sensory-Sensitive-Child-Practical-Solutions-Behavior/dp/006052717X
