Social Stories are personalized stories with simple pictures that explain in plain concise language what the reader can expect to happen in a social situation. It puts the reader in the story and can be personalized for the individual using their name and or picture. These stories can be used as a teaching tool if someone is having a specific problem or if something new is going to happen such as a change in routine. My child’s teacher had a social story about starting to ride the big school bus. It was a very simple story about getting on and off the bus and used the Picture Exchange System pictures mounted on yellow pieces of construction paper and stapled together. These stories help autistic children because it tells them that “they” are actually going to do this.  Hopefully, this early warning will help alleviate problem behaviors.
