choosing an aac device.  AAC stands for augmentative and alternative communication.  Choosing a device can be a difficult task.  Here are some tips to make sure you get the right device for you or your loved one.

  • Ask for assistance from your speech pathologist
  • Ask to look at demonstration units at your local university's speech and/or hearing clinic 
  • Are you looking for a starter device or an upgrade with more options
  • Overall size of the unit
  • Battery length
  • Options
  • Button size
  • Ease of programming
  • Expandability, some of the devices are expensive so how long do you want it to last
  • Warranty
  • Accessories:  do you need a carrying case or shoulder strap
  • How hard is it to get technical support
  • Ask for a demonstration of the unit before purchasing
  • Find funding to purchase the unit

  • Some companies rent devices, if you're not sure it is the right device for your situation
